This past weekend, I went to PS1/MoMa's Summer Warm Up. It happens every Saturday in the summer time and it's basically just a great place to hang out with friends, see some amazing art, eat, drink, and listen to live DJs blasting great music. They have a different installation each year, and this year's was so refreshing (in so many ways!) This year's installation is done by HWKN (Matthias Hollwich and Marc Kushner) and it provides shade, seating, and water. It also is an experiment that tests how far the boundaries of architecture can expand to
create ecological and social effect. Wendy is composed of nylon fabric treated with a
ground breaking titania nanoparticle spray to neutralize airborne pollutants. During the
summer of 2012, Wendy will clean the air to an equivalent of taking 260 cars off the road [
source].
Guests who go to the Summer Warm Up Music series also get an admission to the museum. One of my favorites was the sound art. Speakers were placed around a giant room and if you sit right in the middle, you hear an incredible piece of work. It was soothing as well as inspiring.
Later on, my friends & I decide to head to the Gantry State Plaza park, located in Long Island City - just facing the Manhattan skyline. It was a gorgeous view and the weather was so beautiful. They built an area nearby where it's similar to the greenery and relaxation of the High Line.
There were these great benches on the pier we were at, but on the other side there were hammocks and individual reclining benches in addition to a playground. I think I found my new favorite place!
